Evacuated at the age of ten as part of British Government Operation Pied Piper, Ted tells his WW2 story: Blown Away – Seeds on the Winds of War.

After a lifetime of living with the dramas that unfolded in his young life, Ted Baverstock has published his memoir, complete with charming photos from the time, putting images to the names and places in the book. Now we can all share his recollections of life in a simple, bygone age.

It’s hard to imagine how we would cope today with the uprooting of city children from their families and transplantation to totally alien rural communities.   One can appreciate the threat posed by the blitz and mothers desperation to save their children from death and destruction. Frequently taking on an evacuee was seen as a way to boost the family budget as much as a duty for the war effort by the hosts in these far-off villages. It is in this atmosphere that Ted was shipped with his whole class, from Dagenham in Essex to Shapwick in Somerset. Neither they, nor their parents knew where they were being sent, who they would be billeted with or when, or if, they would see their mothers, fathers and siblings again should London fall to the Nazis.  There were no means of communication other than by letters in the post.

Blown Away Paperback

Ted’s account is detailed and factual. His new life is a revelation and in spite of missing his family and the city he knew, he revels in the exciting new discoveries he makes.  No aspect of his adoptive rural community is omitted – from the wild to the agricultural animals he encountered, the characters he met and the adventures he had.

In a world where children were expected to be resilient and active – helping hands on the farm, in the fields and in the household, Ted tells us of the experiences that shaped and formed him. Certainly his return to the city when the war ended, left him wishing for the clean clear air and open spaces of the Somerset countryside he had grown to love. No doubt his future was directed by these early experiences and his choice to work in horticulture stems directly from these early influences.

A poignant and charming testimony to the strength and spirit of human beings living in the adversity of war.  Available on  Kindle and  in paperback from Amazon worldwide.

Giving away some Love in a Hopeless Place

Emma Calin has announced the launch of the paperback edition of The Love in a Hopeless Place Collection.  To celebrate, there is a giveaway of 3 print copies on Goodreads – this will be drawn on the 18th December, so copies should be posted out before Christmas.

Love in a Hopeless Place Collection

The book contains a five separate titles – three short stories and two novelettes, in a bargain bumper edition: Sub-Prime, Angela, Escape to Love, The Chosen and Love in a Hopeless place.  These stories are not classic romances as such but are about human need – our quest to love and be loved, for respect and acceptance.  They are gritty and explicit tales that deal with modern issues in post-recession societies. Described by Emma as Social Realism for the 21st century.

The Kindle version of the book has been well received, here are some reviews:

The Love in a Hopeless Place Collection of 5 novelettes and short stories in one edition

The Love in a Hopeless Place Collection of 5 novelettes and short stories in one edition

Five star reviews:

“Everybody needs love, everybody wants to be loved, Emma Calin explores love for the ordinary person. She cleverly weaves a tale of people in situations that seem hopeless, and with keen insight showed the true face of helplessness and hopelessness turning into despair.” August 2013,  im1rarebird on Amazon

“I loved the way she managed to make a taxi ride so totally unlike anything you might imagine and the way subjects like disability and payday loans, both very topical and current subjects, were brought into the writing. And love in the most unexpected places as well, and it just goes to show that things like this could happen to any of us. Give it a go – buy this and enjoy!” Bookworm, August 2013

“Emma Calin writes with perfection and is a master of the short story. You will want to keep this collection in your bookshelf forever.” Adina Luca, October 2013

Ted Baverstock Joins The Gallo-Romano Media Hall of Fame

Today I’m delighted to introduce the latest writer to work with us….

Mr Ted Baverstock

Ted Baverstock

Ted has written a memoir of his days as a young lad during WW2 in Great Britain. His book will be coming out shortly in paperback and e-book formats.

Ted was born in the East End of London. At the tender age of 10 he was sent, along with the rest of his school class  to the ‘safety’ of the countryside, away from the Blitz that was to follow.

As part of the British Government’s ‘Operation Pied Piper’ millions of children were taken from their families and relocated to rural villages and towns with complete strangers. It is hard to imagine how a logistical feat could be organised even today with our computers and communications networks – yet somehow this massive task was achieved in the space of just three days.

However, in spite of the wrench from the world he knew, out of this trauma came a life-long relationship between Ted and his host family that endured across the years. Experiences from these times undoubtedly influenced this young lad and opened his world to the potential of a life outside the city.

We are delighted to be able to help Ted publish his book and share the details of his time spent as an evacuee in Shapwick in Somerset, England.

Watch this space for the ‘cover reveal’ which will be coming shortly…

Having fun with Vine for a quick trailer for the Love in a Hopeless Place Collection

Well, just for a moment of light relief we decided to use some of our photos of the individual titles in the Love in a Hopeless Place Collection to create a Vine video book trailer.

Vine is to video what Twitter is to short messages – we are allowed just over 6 seconds of recording time in total so VERY short and sharp visuals only. Once created, you can post the video on Twitter, your website, blog etc.

The recording is done via the video button on a smart phone – I used an iPhone. Vine allows you to make split-second shots and then links them all together in a continuous loop. At the moment Vine does not allow any editing after recording – so you have to get it right first time! Also, there is no audio editing – so you have to make sure that whatever is playing in the background makes sense for your visuals.

It’s very important to plan out in advance what you are going to include – the finished article is so short that every split second counts.

In this video we used images of the 5 covers of the titles in the book collection, along with a few images of the collection cover on an e-reader and also as a printed book, as well as an additional image to indicate the book was available on Amazon. We lined all the shots up on the computer in order and filmed each for a split second. Everything looked great – the Vine video looped round and played on and on and the images made sense. Then we watched with the sound up – it was horrendous, everything from paper shuffling to computer keys to a kettle boiling and music from a distant TV show. A veritable cacophony. The snippet of music though, did not sound so bad. So, we decided to play We Found Love in a Hopeless Place by Rhianna on the CD player whilst we recorded the shots. Obviously it is not a nice smooth audio track – it gets broken up each time we change video clip – but we thought it was better than completely random background noise.

Unsurprisingly, the whole video took a whole morning to complete – getting all the photos for the clips in a similar format, sorting out the sound…. to say nothing of the number of times we recorded it before we managed to fit the whole lot in.

The result… well it’s obviously not going to win any Oscars – but for a quick snap of what the book is about it does serve a purpose. What do you think?

To hear the sound click on the top left of the video on the speaker symbol (you may want to switch it off after a short period!). Click the video to stop and start it.
