All the fun of the book fair

Book Fair 1Gallo-Romano Media was one of 18 publishers exhibiting at the recent ‘Salon des Editeurs’ in the beautiful town of Saint Savinien sur Charente, in south west France.

Our colourful display of titles attracted a great deal of attention from local french readers who braved the freezing weather on ‘Mother’s Day’.  Many were bemused as to why a British company was on show in deepest rural France. They had not realised their little town was a hotbed of activity for book production on an international scale!

In France book pricing is strictly regulated.  Hardback and paperback editions are very expensive and the laws on discounting books put digital versions on sale at more or less the same price as print. There is much scepticism about e-readers and digital books in general.  BUT – we still have book shops in France.

There was a lively public ‘debat’ (discussion) in the afternoon – after a most convivial three-course picnic lunch kindly provided by the Mayor! The consensus was that most local folk could not see themselves reading to their grandchildren from a screen.  I showed them ‘Alf the Workshop Dog’ on my Kindle Fire –  with illustrations and links to video clips and downloadable colouring pictures.  All very nice, but they don’t believe it will catch on.

I worry that French culture will lose out in the long run if it is not accessible to the world. Watch out France – your younger generation is already downloading.  Older folk may not buy-in to e-readers, but the youth of today are using their smart phones, tablets and online devices to satisfy their entertainment needs.  Reading a story is just one small element alongside films, video clips, on-demand TV, gaming and social media that vie for our time. If you’ve got a link to the internet you can read stories from all over the world, regardless of national boundaries.  If there is not enough material at reasonable prices in French, there’s nothing to stop readers trying out the millions of books available in English, German etc.

It would be  shame if their efforts to protect existing publishing structures resulted in limited world access to their wonderful philosophy, poetry and written arts, from which we can all learn so much.

Shannon's Law & Cop's Kitchen

Four weeks after the launch of Emma Calin’s steamy action-romance SHANNON’S LAW and its companion cookbook COP’S KITCHEN, we are pleased to announce that both books hit #1 slots in their best-seller categories on Amazon and reached the top 10 in several others.

SHANNON’S LAW still sits at #1 in Kindle book category British>Humor & Satire and reached #7 in Women’s Fiction>Mystery,Thriller & suspense>Crime and #9 in Literature & Fiction> Erotica>Humorous.  At the same time, the cookbook reached #1 in Food & Drink>Regional & International>UK & Ireland.

With more than 50 reviews worldwide and an average of 4.5 stars Emma is delighted that readers are enjoying the mystery, loving the romance and entering into the social comedy implicit in Emma’s work. She says this is why she writes.

Reviewers say:

“Move over Mr Grey there’s a new Earl in town”

“It’s unusual to find a steamy story that also has good plot and characterization, normally you have to sacrifice one to get the other – the fact that Shannon’s Law had both was one of the key selling points for me. The plot was fascinating and developed well, without being predicable or obvious. The author even managed to throw in a few plot twists that I wasn’t expecting.”

“This is a funny book; the heroine cop is mouthy and hilarious and someone quite new in police-lit.”

“The police side of the story is wonderful, as good as any crime writing that I have had the pleasure of reading and reviewing.  If you are like me just skip about 60 pages of steamy sex scenes and the book is a hit. If you like steamy sex scenes then guess what, you are going to love the book also.”

“This book truly had a little of everything. There were steamy sex scenes (not too bawdy), action & some hilarity, murder, soaked cats & a horse trampling the vegetable garden.”

“There’s a ton of action, a good dose of humor and more importantly, a fun, twisting plot that will hold your interest.”

Love in a Hopeless Place Collection

The book contains a five separate titles – three short stories and two novelettes, in a bargain bumper edition: Sub-Prime, Angela, Escape to Love, The Chosen and Love in a Hopeless place.  These stories are not classic romances as such but are about human need – our quest to love and be loved, for respect and acceptance.  They are gritty and explicit tales that deal with modern issues in post-recession societies. Described by Emma as Social Realism for the 21st century.

The Kindle version of the book has been well received, here are some reviews:

The Love in a Hopeless Place Collection of 5 novelettes and short stories in one edition

The Love in a Hopeless Place Collection of 5 novelettes and short stories in one edition

Five star reviews:

“Everybody needs love, everybody wants to be loved, Emma Calin explores love for the ordinary person. She cleverly weaves a tale of people in situations that seem hopeless, and with keen insight showed the true face of helplessness and hopelessness turning into despair.” August 2013,  im1rarebird on Amazon

“I loved the way she managed to make a taxi ride so totally unlike anything you might imagine and the way subjects like disability and payday loans, both very topical and current subjects, were brought into the writing. And love in the most unexpected places as well, and it just goes to show that things like this could happen to any of us. Give it a go – buy this and enjoy!” Bookworm, August 2013

“Emma Calin writes with perfection and is a master of the short story. You will want to keep this collection in your bookshelf forever.” Adina Luca, October 2013

Ted Baverstock Joins The Gallo-Romano Media Hall of Fame

Today I’m delighted to introduce the latest writer to work with us….

Mr Ted Baverstock

Ted Baverstock

Ted has written a memoir of his days as a young lad during WW2 in Great Britain. His book will be coming out shortly in paperback and e-book formats.

Ted was born in the East End of London. At the tender age of 10 he was sent, along with the rest of his school class  to the ‘safety’ of the countryside, away from the Blitz that was to follow.

As part of the British Government’s ‘Operation Pied Piper’ millions of children were taken from their families and relocated to rural villages and towns with complete strangers. It is hard to imagine how a logistical feat could be organised even today with our computers and communications networks – yet somehow this massive task was achieved in the space of just three days.

However, in spite of the wrench from the world he knew, out of this trauma came a life-long relationship between Ted and his host family that endured across the years. Experiences from these times undoubtedly influenced this young lad and opened his world to the potential of a life outside the city.

We are delighted to be able to help Ted publish his book and share the details of his time spent as an evacuee in Shapwick in Somerset, England.

Watch this space for the ‘cover reveal’ which will be coming shortly…
