Smiles all round at Gallo-Romano Media

We received a lovely email today from the author of “101 Tips on How To Be A Bouncer” – Mr Darren Lee.  He has now received his finished audiobook – narrated by our very own Oscar Sparrow and seems very pleased with the result.

Not being shy about blowing our own trumpet… we our proud to share his testimonial with you:

101 How To be a Bouncer audiobook cover (1)“When I first decided to seek auditions for my book, 101 Tips on How to Be a Bouncer: Techniques to Handle Situations Without Violence, into an audiobook I really had no idea what to expect. I knew I wanted a British accent which was refined, yet had a bit of an edge. Some of the auditions missed the point completely and others sounded like they had been recorded in a garbage can outside a nightclub. I had just about given up entirely when along came Oscar Sparrow of Gallo-Romano Media with a short audition piece that seemed to perfectly duplicate what I wanted, plus adding a certain quality to his product which only comes from years of experience and dedication. In short, to say I am happy with the audiobook is an understatement. For Oscar, his work isn’t just a churn and burn to make a quick buck. He is VERY good at what he does, it certainly shows in his work and I would have no hesitation recommending him to prospective audiobook producers in the future!”

Thanks Darren! Needless to say… we are all walking round with big grins on our faces.

The Gentleman And The Rogue – Recording The Audiobook Right Now

The Gentleman and The RogueWe are in the process of recording an historical romance with a twist!  The Gentleman and The Rogue by Bonnie Dee and Summer Devon is period erotic romance and our first m/m gay audiobook.

With over 670 ratings on Goodreads and 5 star ratings on Amazon we knew we were in for an interesting story and we were not disappointed. It is a cracking mystery adventure with an evil villain, a noble quest, forbidden love, passion and romance all developed in a fast moving plot.

The recording has been a challenge as the authors requested that the Gentleman should have an upper class accent and the Rogue, as a young cockney sparrow should sound as if he comes from a lower class London background.  This seemed very reasonable and the authors loved the audition we sent them.

When we read through the book before starting the recording we then discovered that there are actually 15 other characters plus the narrator  – a young girl, servants, footmen, landlords, a doctor and a magistrate to name a few!  We have had a lot of fun placing all their accents and characters – and even more fun keeping track of them so that when they appear at different times in the book they are consistent.  All in a day’s work for narrators and editors!

The main audio is now almost complete.  Then it’s over to the editor for processing and checking.  This audiobook will probably last over 9 hours when it’s complete so it takes many hours of painstaking work to edit it all together, get rid of any strange noises (tummy rumbles before lunch and ‘oinks’ after!) as well as final polishing to blend it all together.

If you need to read it before the audiobook is out (end of May 2013) you can find it by clicking here: The Gentleman And The Rogue on Amazon Worldwide  (NB. Explicit erotic content).

The Proof of the Pudding is in the Freeze Frame

We were all excited when the proof copy of FREEZE FRAME landed on the doormat four days earlier than anticipated.  We love digital media but there is nothing like holding the real thing in your hand and flicking through those pristine pages.

It’s almost there – a couple of changes and we’re good to go.

We’ve also formatted the e-book for Smashwords, so in a couple of weeks from now FREEZE FRAME will be available for just about every e-reading device known to man e.g. Kindle, Kobo, Nook, Apple, iPad, Android, Sony, EPUB etc etc. as well in traditional tactile format.

Both the e-book and print book include the free link to the audio recordings of FREEZE FRAME – a one hour poetry fest where each poet performs their poems – a real treat!

Santa maybe
Santa may-be

Sometimes I have to remind myself that I am a reasonably serious old bloke who has scribbled poems for about 50 years. Finding myself posing in a Santa hat holding a Kindle Fire device for a picture to be captioned with punny quips made me wonder if I had lost the plot. If I appear disrespectful to poets and poetry I do apologise. O brave new world that has such peep-shows in it. Such is the circus of the modern book world. Apparently some fiction writers are so busy on the road that all their stuff is done by ghost writers. Seemingly it’s the brand that matters. It seems incredible to me. Perhaps I won’t beat myself up over the Santa hat. If it makes poetry more accessible and unstuffy then it has to be a Google plus. I defy anyone to ghost write in the style of any of the six Freeze Frame writers.

Far more importantly, the book is out there and up on Amazon. It was delivered without anaesthetic during the night, about 24 hours premature but at a good weight and with powerful voice. This is not the end of course but at least everything is all together and in one place. The stars are the poets who had enough faith in me to join in and risk all to be part of the Freeze Frame project.

Tomorrow evening 1800 hours UK (GMT)  – 12 noon USA EST – there will be a launch party at which all can meet the poets. There will be readings and comments and hopefully a few silly hats.  This takes place on Facebook with a live link to a Google+ ‘Hangout’ – you can watch us all having our virtual champagne and reading a selection of poems from the collection.  Here’s the link:

Freeze Frame Poetry Anthology – The Cover Story

Poet and intrepid editor Oscar Sparrow interviews the cover designer for the new Freeze Frame Anthology …

Relax – Will’s got ‘em covered

I always thought that if I ever got the point of hearing myself saying “When I was young….” it would be time to step off the conveyor. One of my favourite jokes is about a kid who asks his dad “Do parents know more than their kids?” The father replied “Yes”. The kid thought for while and asked “Who invented the steam engine?” The father replied “James Watt.” The kid nodded and asked “Why didn’t his dad invent it then?”

Probably many of you know that joke or a variant. Like all good humour it is funny because it makes a serious point. Mankind is constantly refreshed by youth and fresh eyes. Sadly too often they are born into existing bigotries and the grand tribe of Chief Tendentious. Despite all discouragements, our constant rebirth brings new talent and energy. I always try not to be overtly political but our societies really ought to prioritise  the need to give young folk opportunities to show their abilities and earn a good wage.

I want a cover

I want a cover (Photo credit Fotothing)

The reason for this preamble was my chat with Will who did the cover for Freeze Frame. I felt like an old silverback wandering into the room and saying  ”I want a book cover – here’s the title. See what you can do.”

The rest was done by Will who is a design student. I asked him a couple of questions

Did the concept of Freeze Frame immediately give you an idea?

Yes, and the fact that were several writers gave me the concept more or less at once. At first I played with the idea of picture frames but the film format begged to be done really.

What makes a good book cover?

Ha ha – it depends who you ask or what advice you take. Oscar tells me that poetry lovers don’t mind thinking a bit so I guess you can be a bit more cryptic. A good book cover to me is something that catches my eye because there are so many to choose from. In this case I wanted to get some bold interesting colours to contrast with the black and white. As a designer you are always trying out new pathways.

FreezeFrameWhat technology do you use?

I use photoshop on a Mac but I’m just as happy on a PC.

Did you read the poems?

No, but I listened to them all because I was there when the music track was being added. Audio book construction is pretty cool because it comes together from all kinds of angles. When you hear the tracks you think you sort of know those people.

Were you happy with the finished result?

To be fair I was more nervous than anything. I looked at it and wondered if it was a bit risky because it’s probably a bit busy in pure terms. It’s been great to get good feedback and I can breathe again.

Favourite film? Favourite song today?

Back To The Future. Favourite song would be “Some Nights” by Fun. It is a strange video because it’s about the American civil war. If I get the time I’ll be finding out a bit more about it. I mean, where did that concept come from for  music visuals? It’s gonna bug me…..

It’s great to work with young folk. (Said the patronising old fart). These guys have stuff at their fingertips where I don’t have fingers. Will be out of college next year and is up for any offers or work in the meantime via Gallo-Romano.

Freeze Frame Anthology of Poetry – Progress

top_secret

Last night was rather exciting – my cover designer came back with the first draft of the artwork for the FREEZE FRAME Anthology.  I’m really pleased with it… but I have to show it to all the poets first before I can let you see.  Sorry about that.

We’ve also been busy editing the recordings the poets made of their work for the anthology.  They’re all sounding good and it’s been fun listening to them – there are so many contrasts in accents, styles and delivery. I’ve also got the Freeze Frame original music stuck in my head – it’s a beautiful piece for piano written by a local lass specifically for this project.  Look out for the ‘Music Reveal’ later this week.

Adding all the minutes together, we’ll probably end up with an album lasting well over an hour and a half.  Anyone who buys the e-book or the paperback will be able to download the MP3 version for free – you can even load it into the music folder on a Kindle and listen as you read!  We think it’s really important to hear poetry read aloud by the poets with the emphases and stresses as they intended.

Have a great weekend poetry lovers.

Excitement builds…

Here at Gallo-Romano Media we are busy pulling together an international anthology of poetry.  There are 6 poets, 60+ poems and 60+ audio recordings of each poet reading their own work.

The book is called FREEZE FRAME and will be coming out in digital e-book format for Kindle just in time for Christmas.  As with many of our other publications, this e-book  will have the bonus of a free link to the audio book – so you get two versions for the price of one.

The print version will follow shortly and will also include the link to the recorded poetry, so even if you prefer to read from paper, you can still enjoy our poets giving their best performances.

This book will be one of the most innovative and exciting expressions of contemporary poetry published in 2013.

Watch this space for the cover reveal shortly…..
